Another Raspberry Pi project that is becoming very popular is a bitcoin miner controlled by the Raspberry Pi. While the GPU on the Pi could mine bitcoins, it would be exceedingly slow, so most people use ASIC devices to do the work while the Pi simply co-ordinates the calculations.
The bitcoin mining setup depicted above uses 4 ASIC devices, a powered USB hub, and, the cool part, a Adafruit LCD/Keypad kit, which can display hashrate, error rate, share data, network difficulty, mining duration and current exchange rates.
I am actually very interested in this project, however I will need to do a bit more research to see how long it will be before I see any returns for my hardware investment.
Also, Adafruit have a complete tutorial for this design!
